Statue Unveiling

In 2010 Pieter Toerien asked art expert Ilse Schermers to invite proposals for an artwork to be positioned in the Victoria Road parking lot in front of Theatre On the Bay.
12 artists from around South Africa submitted their proposals and created maquettes of their artwork.
Pieter then asked Theatre on the Bay subscribers to vote for their favourite artwork.
Guy du Toit and Egon Tania submitted the beautiful bowing actor statue, winning over everybody with the simple and effective depiction of the theatre in a community.
He then commissioned the life-size sculpture and with the commitment and assistance from councillor Beverly Schafer, all the arrangements were made to light
the sculpture and give him a “stage” in Camps Bay.
Anna Mart van der Merwe, who is no stranger to taking a bow on stage, unveiled the statue on Tuesday 20 March.
“May this sculpture, this footprint of Pieter Toerien, Guy Du Toit and Egon Tania empower all who lay eyes on it, to believe more, to see more, to
experience more… however unbearably light our beings might be…” said van der Merwe before revealing the bronze, bowing actor casting a shadow on the wall of the historic
building behind him.
